The Gurt Lush Choir is a big community choir made up of 4 smaller choirs.
You DON'T have to audition or sing on your own.
You DON'T need to read music, although we do use manuscript (music) as a learning aid, and you will learn to read it through singing with us.
You DON'T need any previous experience of choirs or singing to join us, but if you haven't, you should expect to feel out of your depth or inadequate at times! It's normal, everyone goes through it. You'll aquire the necessary skills just by 'hanging in there'. We don't care how long it takes you, as long as you don't either!
You DO need to be up for a challenge - Rehearsals move fast, and we sing in up to 8 part harmony.
It would be fair to say that we sit in between most of the Community Choirs that tend to work without music and usually only sing in 3 or 4 parts, and the classical choirs that use music, regularly divide into 8 parts, but sing only classical repertoire.
We hope to sing the eclectic mix of a good community choir, but with the richer, more ambitious harmonies and tone colour of the 'posh' choirs. Come and see if you can help us make it work!
All members get a free training CD with all the music recorded on it, so you can learn your part simply by singing along with the CD. Also, as a new arrival, we'll put you with a more experienced singer so you don't feel completely 'lost'. We sing songs from all over the world, in gurt lush multi-part harmonies: Hot Gospel, Ancient Spirituals, East-European/African/Celtic and even English folksongs, short classical pieces, Pop and Soul..... No style or period is excluded, as long as the arrangement is good!
We rehearse every week in term time:
For exact times and locations see Join Gurt Lush. If you join any one of the choirs, you can automatically pop in to the other choirs' rehearsals any time, at no extra cost, which is handy if you have a complicated diary, or just fancy some extra singing! Everyone gets at least one free taster session, then it works out at £5 or £6 per session, or less for concessions.
See you there!
