...Welcome to Ashley & welcome back to all you returning newbies! -Hang in there, -it can only get easier...
Speaking of which, I notice that however hard we try many new members often end up stuck towards the back, whereas I think they should always be near the front, (unless they prefer to be at the back, in which case, no problem). I know that this is not always easy to achieve practically, so the latest plan is to reserve some front seats at every rehearsal from now on for new (or new-ish) members. (My view is that people need & deserve extra help right through their first year of membership).
Thanks for your help in making this work. Hospitality towards new members is a duty of care, & proud as I am of our existing record on this matter, we will never stop striving to improve it further. This will be a continuing conversation!!
A Spaceman came travelling
Three Kings from Persian Lands (Green Book)
In Dulci Jubilo (Green Book)
Coventry Carol (Green Book)
O Little One Sweet, Gaudete, Good King Wenceslas, Ding Dong & O Come (Redland)
& Caput Apri Defero, River & Hark the Herald (Southville)
A slight swerve...! -On Sun. 26th (at the end of next week), we have our last ‘pre-carol season’ concert.
The repertoire will be the same as for the last concert in St Pauls, PLUS, (Newsflash!), a couple of the more unusual carols! (Namely, The Lamb, Gaudete, Caput Apri Defero, & River).
...I know, I know... -No carol should ever be performed outside of December, but...
a) The Arts Trail would prefer us to perform for longer if possible
b) Most people wouldn’t readily recognise the above as carols
c) They’re really cool & at least we’ve been working on them, unlike the older stuff!
So total setlist & probable timings now reads as follows:
(We will whip through everything on our list at next weeks rehearsals, but there’s no extra rehearsal on concert day).
Sun. Nov. 26th. 4.15-5.45-ish. St Michael & All Angels Church, Gloucester Rd, BS7 8NT.
Part of the North Bristol Arts Trail. Music all weekend. Full programme details further below.

New people, very welcome & are encouraged to come & do as much or as little of the set as you’re comfortable with.
It’s an informal community event. We won’t be at the very top of our game, but that doesn’t matter, it’ll still sound great, & it’s our home ground after all! Also, relatively easy to ‘sell’ to the family as the Arts Trail will fill the building with cake & tea as well as arts & crafts!
Full programme for the weekend is:
Saturday 25th November.
1.00 Ukons. Eccentric ukelele band.

St Albans Tickets
Will be on sale at all branches from next week. (That’s our ‘flagship’ Crimbo Concert on Sat 16th Dec.)
Bit of posh, Bit of pop & a bit of sing-a-long, all family friendly, with a bar & not too long! The perfect Xmas Concert.
Adults £10, u18 £2. Only 250-ish tickets available in total, so fairly high risk of selling out. You have been warned!
Flyers & Posters for that same gig need getting out there! It’s a competitive time of year. Get to work please!
The rest below is repeated from previous mails
Coventry Carol part distribution N.B! To improve the balance I’ve put all altos onto the Tenor part & all T2’s onto the Bass part. So if the audio sounds different to how you remember it from last time, then that’s why!
(Sops, T1’s & Basses unaffected).
Full List of ‘Carols likely to be sung at some point’
For the Lord Mayor’s/Bristol Post/Radio Bristol Carol Concert. (All to be sung with the audience).
Hark the Herald, Good King Wenceslas, Ding Dong Merrily on High, O come all ye faithful. (All in harmony & from the Green Book).
Also we will sing unison versions of ‘Chestnuts Roasting’ (The Christmas Song), 12 days of Christmas & Slade’s ‘merry xmas everybody’.
Other ‘standard’ carols from the Green Book
The first Nowell, It came upon a midnight clear, Away in a Manger, Once in Royal, O Little Town, While Shepherds Watched.
& more obscure, but still in the Green Book
Past 3 O’ Clock, O little one sweet, Coventry Carol, In Dulci Jubilo, Three Kings from Persian Lands.
+ of course the ‘posh or unusual ‘carols & ’winter pop’ which we’ve been focussing on in rehearsals.
For New People if you wish to minimise the burden of new material to learn, then focus on the ‘posh or unusual’, then the full list of carols above in the order I wrote it. Also, remember, for any carols you already know, you’re welcome to just join in on the tune for this year, while you’re getting round to learning the alto/tenor/bass part!
Above all, don’t worry, just enjoy the crazy! Hope that makes sense.
Many of the carols we sing are arrangements from the ‘Green Book’, (More correctly known as ‘Carols for Choirs 1’), published by Oxford University Press. As these arrangements are still under copyright, I’m afraid that new members will need to buy a copy at some point. It’s always available from Amazon, & usually sells 2nd hand for about a tenner, although if you’re patient then you can sometimes get copies for under £3! Any edition, however old.. -they’re all the same inside. We do have a few copies we can lend out while you’re getting it sorted!
Next Concert Sun. Nov. 26th. 4.30-5.30-ish. St Michael & All Angels Church, Gloucester Rd, BS7 8NT.
Part of the North Bristol Arts Trail & last ‘normal’ one before we dive into the Crimbo season.
