Dear Local bands, orchestras, choirs, music lovers and makers,
I've just sent a version of this email to over 180 members of BCWB and I thought you might be able to help us with something we have been trying to achieve for a while.
As a Bristol based band we would like to play in parks and bandstands in Bristol, the city in which most of us live. When we play in parks it's generally in South Glos or in BANES, this is because Bristol City Council effectively charge bands to play by passing on the cost of the music licence to us. As a result there is very little music played in Bristol parks and bandstands unless it's part of a large money generating festival for whom the cost of a music licence will be tiny when compared to their other costs.
We think this is a real shame and that the public would like to hear traditional (and other) bands playing in Bristol bandstands, just as they do in Bath. We also know from our experiences of playing in other parks that the music draws users to the park.
Bristol City Council have recently opened a consultation because they are making cuts* to the parks service. This is our chance to get our views heard about music in parks. One of the councils proposals is to make more money from services like cafes within parks. In order to do this they will need to attract people to the area - empty bandstands do not do that.
Please fill in the consultation at https://bristol.citizenspace.com/neighbourhoods/parks-and-green-spaces/ and tell the council (there is an opportunity to give your ideas at question that there is money to be made by inviting bands to play in order to attract people to use parks. Remind them that people who are being entertained stay longer and spend more money.
Please consider sending a copy of this email to your members. Imagine the impact we could have if we all responded. If you know people in other bands, please spread the word.
*You may have heard that the cuts have been dropped, the idea of forcing parks to become "cost neutral" has been dropped but cuts will still be made and the consultation still happening.
Many thanks for your support,
